The word 'Reiki' is made of two Japanese words, Rei which means “God's Wisdom” or “the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy.” So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” A treatment feels like a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through you and treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit.

What is a mantra? ‘Mantra’ is not a Tibetan word, it is a Sanskrit word. In Tibetan the word for ‘mantra’ is Ngags. The real meaning of the word ‘mantra’ is ‘to save the mind and the conscience from suffering and illness’; therefore mantra actually means trying to recover, putting and end to suffering. However, a mantra has different functions, and there isn’t only one mantra, there are various different ones. 

The esoteric Tibetan tradition considers that the thirty letters of the Tibetan alphabet are distributed, or present, in the various parts of the body. For example, RA is to be found in the shoulder joint, between the shoulder and the arm, therefore if we recite mantras including the syllable RA, we can feel a sensation of vibration in that part of the body. When people interested in these practices will have developed a strong capacity, they will also be able to see inside the body and make out the shape of these letters, which really exist as they are represented on the outside.

In which way did we start using mantras for healing? In Tibetan culture it is believed that during Tibetan history, in very remote times, some people with specific knowledge manifested and gave origin to the healing mantras. These people were called Drangsong.

The Drangsong were sages who usually abandoned their family to live in solitude in wild and lonely places, in order to dedicate themselves to studying and developing knowledge. In such solitude they developed knowledge, intuition and specific physical sensations, which only manifest when the mind is in a state of total relaxation and tranquillity. Through this, they gave origin to the use of mantras as a healing technique using sound.

People that discovered the function of sound, also discovered the function of colour, therefore, sing both sound and colour for healing practices. According to traditional Tibetan culture, many, many years ago beings from other dimensions lived in Tibet and they later transmitted the teachings on healing practices to human beings. In Tibetan language these beings are called Masang and Thiurang. These beings from other dimensions, whose external appearance was very similar to that of human beings, were energy beings, who therefore always solved their health problems by working on the energy level. For this reason, we presume that the secret power of healing through the use of mantras comes from the healing energy which these beings infused in some mantras, then transmitted to human beings.
